If you’re going to enlist the services of a cheap campervan hire company and go camping or backpacking, make sure that you mind your surroundings, especially if you’re in New South Wales. Some NSW residents are complaining that there are unruly backpackers and campers who disregard the local environment and just leave their mess behind once they are done having fun.

Over the last 12 months, people at Shelly Beach, in Port Macquarie on NSW’s mid-north coast, have been lobbying the local council to do something about budget travellers who bypass paid camping grounds. They complained that many of them can no longer use the beach’s car park because most of it has already been occupied by budget travellers sleeping in their campervans and vehicles for days. According to them, many of these backpackers were monopolising facilities such as barbecues, taps, and showers.

Some of Sydney’s parks and beachside reserves have also been transformed into rubbish-filled makeshift campsites by these campers, many of whom seemed to be from outside Australia. Some frustrated homeowners even claimed that some backpackers had even been going to the toilet on the ground, washing themselves in public, and using public facilities for cleaning cooking utensils. According to them, not only is this bad for the local environment, allowing these backpackers to bypass paid campsites is quite unfair for cheap campervan hire users who follow the rules.

In response to the mounting complaints, the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council began an eight-month “free camping management trial” to address the issue. No camping signs have been put up at tourist hot spots while people travelling on campervans were given brochures outlining the council’s policy on free camping. Rangers are also patrolling “hotspot locations” to make sure that campers are not harming the local environment.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with staying at free campsites, it is always important to ensure that you’re not doing anything that will annoy the local residents when going on a backpacking adventure. As mentioned earlier, you should always be mindful of your surroundings and you must follow the local rules and regulations when signing up for cheap campervan hire services and visiting a tourist spot.

Also, be sure to dispose of your trash properly. Don’t leave anything behind that can harm the local flora and fauna. Always remember that our natural treasures are irreplaceable, which is why you must respect and take care of your surroundings to ensure a fun cheap campervan hire holiday.
